Combine ancient history with magnificent outdoor landscapes

Cartagena, in the southeast of Spain, is an historic port city surrounded by natural landscapes – Europe’s largest lagoon, coastal mountains and beaches along the Mediterranean coast. The old quarter of the city is walled, and two prominent forts on steep outcroppings overlook the harbor. Rather recently – in 1987 – the city made a stunning discovery, when they unearthed the 1st-century Roman Theatre, originally ordered to be built by Augustus Caesar, and found to contain 60 percent of the theatre’s original materials. The artifacts and inscriptions found are displayed in the Municipal Archaeological Museum. Take a tour of the city and theatre with rock-excavated seating and a large, decorous stage. Along the port, you’ll also discover another distinct part of Cartagena’s history – the Peral Submarine, designed by Carthaginian Isaac Peral and launched in 1888.

Cartagena Architecture

Many early 20th-century art nouveau buildings spread through the city, including the grand City Hall, the Casino and Railways Station and Grande Hotel. In the same area, Calle Mayor (High Street) is one of the liveliest in the city, filled with bars, boutiques and tapas for a pleasant afternoon as a Carthaginian.

Cartagena activities and cuisine

Just 10 minutes away from your resort villa, you will enjoy the sandy beaches and nautical sports at the Mar Menor lagoon. Shallow, clear warm waters make the site popular for swimming, boating and waterfront walks. You also can opt for sailing lessons for your children or kiteboarding for the adventurous. Be sure to stop in at Viva Bar and Restaurant in Los Nietos for a relaxing meal with great food, value and delightful waterfront views across the Mar Menor.

Vacation villas – the perfect home base

As much as you will enjoy city and beach excursions for shopping, dining and play; you will appreciate returning to your private condo or home rental at the end of the day. Beyond the pleasures of home-cooked meals on the patio, you will enjoy all of the resort amenities and family-friendly activities. No hotel stay can compare with the value, space and privacy of your own vacation rental.
